Armed Individual Killed, Three Law Enforcement Officers Wounded in Northeast Washington Shooting
An armed individual has died, and three law enforcement officers are being treated following a confrontation in Northeast Washington, D.C., in the early hours of Monday. The event took place on Florida Avenue NE, in proximity to the NoMa-Gallaudet U Metro station, as reported by D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith.
Law enforcement received a call at approximately 4:38 a.m. regarding an armed individual in an apartment complex lobby located in the 300 block of Florida Avenue NE. Officers arrived and located the male subject in the building’s entrance area.
The individual then escaped into an elevator, leading additional police units to assist in the search.
Subsequently, the subject exited the elevator and confronted officers in the lobby area. When police attempted to apprehend him, the individual drew a weapon and opened fire on the officers.
In the violent exchange that followed, officers discharged their weapons, hitting the subject.
The individual, whose identity remains undisclosed, was declared deceased on site despite officers’ emergency medical intervention.
The three wounded officers suffered gunshot injuries and were taken to local medical facilities. Chief Pamela Smith stated that all three officers remain in stable condition.
The Internal Affairs Division of D.C. Police, working alongside the Criminal Investigations Division, is leading the inquiry into the incident.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office will conduct a separate evaluation.
The three officers involved have been temporarily relieved of duty with pay, following standard departmental procedures.
“This incident serves as another stark reminder of the risks we confront daily in our city and nationwide. I’m thankful our officers survived this encounter without sustaining life-threatening injuries,” Chief Smith stated during a media briefing.
During the ongoing investigation, Florida Avenue NE between 2nd and 4th Streets NE, and 3rd Street NE between Florida Avenue and M Street NE remain inaccessible.
Additional information will be released as the investigation develops.
