Suspected Arsonist Jose Carranza-Escobar Detained at Pioneer Park in Azusa
A brush fire incident at Pioneer Park results in suspect’s capture. On Friday, January 10, 2025, around 11:37 PM, law enforcement personnel responded to Pioneer Park, situated at 1360 N. Dalton Ave., following reports of a brush fire.
When officers reached the scene, a witness informed them that the person responsible for setting the fire remained in the vicinity.
Law enforcement officials found the adult male suspect, identified as Jose Carranza-Escobar, a homeless individual previously residing in Azusa, positioned beside the burning area.
Officers swiftly apprehended Carranza while Los Angeles County Fire Department arrived to combat the flames.
Fire crews from Los Angeles County rapidly contained the blaze. During questioning, Carranza acknowledged starting the fire and was charged with arson.
He was later processed at the Azusa Police Department Jail where he remains in custody.
Azusa Public Works and Azusa Light and Water teams are evaluating the fire’s impact on the area.
The case remains under investigation. Azusa PD requests public vigilance as fires persist throughout the county. Communities must stay watchful for individuals entering the area with intentions to start fires.
The Azusa Police Department has deployed additional officers in response to the ongoing fire situation.
